Committment
COMMITMENT
IS THE THING.
SOLDIERS IN THE RANKS HAVE
RARELY, OVER THE AGES, FOUGHT FOR KING, COUNTRY, FREEDOM, OR MORAL
PRINCIPLE.
MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE
MEN
HAVE FOUGHT AND WINNERS HAVE WON BECAUSE OF A COMMITMENT
– TO A LEADER AND
TO
A SMALL BROTHERHOOD
WHERE THE TIES THAT BIND ARE
MUTUAL RESPECT
AND CONFIDENCE, SHARED PRIVATION, SHARED HAZARD, SHARED TRIUMPH, A WILLINGNESS
TO OBEY, AND DETERMINATION TO FOLLOW.
HISTORIAN
RICHARD H. KOHN SAYS IT WELL.
“RATHER
THAN BEING MOTIVATED BY PATRIOTISM OR POLITICAL IDEALOGY, OUR SOLDIERS HAVE
SUSTAINED THEMSELVES IN THE STRESS OF A BATTLE BY A VARIETY OF MEANS, FROM THE
NETWORK OF ESTEEM AND INTERDEPENDENCE THAT CREATES
THE COHESION OF A UNIT TO
THE WILL AND INSTINCT FOR SURVIVAL.”

A GAME OF INCHES
It was a crucial Baltimore Colt-Green Bay Packer game. The Western Division Title was riding on the outcome. It was 3rd and 6, the Colts with the ball inside the Packer 30 yard line threatening and needing one touchdown to go ahead late in the 4th quarter. Willie Davis, the great Packer defensive end is fighting to get to Unitas in an effort to force an incompletion. A Colt receiver breaks open down the middle with clear sailing to the goal line. Davis is closing in on Unitas with a great effort. Unitas releases the ball, but just as he does Willie Davis manages to barely get a piece of the ball. It’s not much, but it takes trajectory off the throw. The receiver has to slow down slightly and reach down for a low pass. This delay turns a potential touchdown into a 20 yard gain and 1st down. *On the next play, the Colts fumble; the Packers recover, and then run out the clock. If Willie Davis had been just a few inches later, Baltimore would have won. It’s a game on inches. A little extra strength, a little extra endurance, a little extra determination—somewhere along the line the great Packer defensive end paid a price. The payoff was mighty big as they went on to a Championship.
In any area of football you want to examine, you can see very dramatically that football is indeed a GAME OF INCHES. A receiver gets to a ball by inches; a defender leaps to intercept or deflect and make it by inches; a ball carrier eludes a tacklers grasp by inches; a lineman makes a last gasp effort and keeps his man off the passer by inches.
To the individual athletes this means that if his extra work and efforts pays off in increasing his speed by inches—it can mean the difference. If it pays off in increasing his strength of whatever may be the area in which he’s working – just a slight margin can mean the difference between success and failure.
KEEP FIGHTING!!!One of THE MOST DIFFICULT THINGS everyone has to learn is that for your entire life you must “ keep fighting” and adjusting if you hope to survive. No matter who you are or what your position, you must keep fighting for whatever it is you desire to achieve.
If someone is not aware of this contest and expects
otherwise, then constant disappointment occurs.
People who fail sometimes do not realize that the simple answer to
everyday achievement is to
keep fighting.
Health, happiness and success depend upon the
fighting spirit of
each person.
The big thing is not what
happens to us in life --- but what we
do about what happens to us.
-George H. Allen (written when he was chairman of the President’s
Council on Physical Fitness and Sports)
